Things go viral or get popular and people then presume it's going to blow their brains out their assholes and think it's shit if it doesn't. guess I'm just using this as an outlet to discuss the book in general. If it doesn't work for any one individual reader I get that, but again much like the eroguro/guro scene in manga it's more about unsettling imagery with an undercurrent of social commentary than anything else. It would stand to reason we don't witness every last second of their interactions with one another, just the most pertinent ones. With that in mind there is no reason to assume the two of them didn't talk more than what we are privy to. In that regard I think it was a success.Īlso worth noting is that the first story is being presented as a "true" event. The author didn't seem to want to develop a realistic relationship but instead tell an effective short story about manipulative relationships, mental health, and obsession. Subjective opinion aside I think that is a pretty empty critique. One of the criticisms I see leveled at the first short in this book is how the relationship that develops between the two characters is "too fast", "unrealistic", or "needed more time". Maybe it's because it has some of the most unsettling imagery? People get hung up on the beef eating sequence, but again, oddly enough not the one in which a horrific crime against an innocent human being is committed? Again.
